HISTORY

Located east of Santa Fe along Interstate 25, Glorieta has long served as an important gateway through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Before European settlement, Native peoples traveled through Glorieta Pass as a natural route connecting the Great Plains with the Rio Grande Valley. Spanish settlers later established nearby communities and used the pass for trade, travel, and military movement throughout northern New Mexico.

Glorieta became nationally significant during the Civil War as the site of the Battle of Glorieta Pass, fought March 26–28, 1862. Often referred to as the “Gettysburg of the West,” the battle halted Confederate expansion into the Southwest and helped preserve Union control of the region. Much of the battlefield is now preserved within Pecos National Historical Park.

Following the Civil War, the arrival of the railroad in the late 1800s brought new growth to the area. Glorieta developed as a small railroad and supply community supporting nearby ranching, logging, and mining operations. Over time, the area became known for its mountain setting, historic significance, and proximity to the forests and wilderness areas of northern New Mexico.
