HISTORY

The Galisteo Basin has a long history dating back thousands of years, with early Indigenous communities later building large pueblos throughout the region. By the 1600s, Spanish settlers introduced ranching, farming, and mining to the area, shaping much of the landscape still seen today.
 
The village of Galisteo was founded in 1816 and became an important agricultural and ranching community in northern New Mexico.
 
In 1880, the railroad reached the eastern Basin and established Lamy as a railroad town and passenger hub serving Santa Fe. Lamy remained closely tied to the railroad industry through the early 1900s and continues to serve as a rail stop today.
 

HIGHLIGHTS

Lamy Train Station

The historic Lamy Train Station was built in 1909 and became the primary rail gateway to Santa Fe after railroad engineers determined the terrain made a direct mainline route into Santa Fe impractical. Today, it remains an active Amtrak station and an important part of northern New Mexico's railroad history.
